Our supermarket rescue food pickups, plus this week’s purchases and donations totaled 2,555 lbs. of food, however; a big part of that 1.25 tons of food came from a special, one time Thursday food pickup from the Westbrook Hannaford that was  coordinated by Karlene.  She pulled together a Thursday team of volunteers that included Anne, Debbie S, Jean, Nikki, Steve, and Wayne and Martha Lopez.  Most of them did double duty, volunteering Thursday and then again on Friday with Greg and Rena.  The Sunday crew included Angie, Cat, Dee, Donna, Mike H, Phil, Rebecca and myself.

Thank you everyone who jumped in and helped out this week with the two days of food pickups, with all the clients who were served, and with all the prayers that were offered!            — Doug

Hi Team – We had an exciting weekend at your Stroudwater Food Pantry!  It began on Friday when we picked up and processed just over a ton of fresh food rescue, largely eggs, meat and dairy, from our three supermarkets.  Sunday proved to be one of our busiest so far this year as we served 59 families, providing groceries to a total of 181 people.  8 new families joined the pantry this week.

The topper though was what happened just minutes before we opened our pantry doors on Sunday to the line of people waiting outside; a nearby electrical transformer blew up and the entire Stroudwater neighborhood, including our church, lost all electrical power.  It left pantry volunteers in the dark and working by flashlight, but we opened the pantry and served a huge portion of groceries to a very large and appreciative crowd of clients!  After about 75 minutes the lights came back on and we finished the day under power.

Volunteers this week included Angie, Anne, Pastor Bill, Cat, Debbie S, Jean, Karlene, Lois, Michael C, Nicki, Phil, Rena, Steve, and myself.  This week’s volunteers clearly went above and beyond in overcoming obstacles to serve a community in need.  Thank you team!  —  Doug

This past Sunday, August 12th, marked the 3rd anniversary of your Stroudwater Food Panty.  Three years ago we opened our doors and started our first pantry day serving 4 families;

  • Today we have more than 500 families in active enrollment.
  • During its three years of operation, SFP has distributed 142 tons of food to those who are meal insecure. This is an estimated equivalent of 709,650 meals.
  • SFP has forged strategic alliances with a variety of outside enterprises, including the Good Shepherd Food Bank, Maine Medical Center, Spectrum Communications, My Place Teen Center in Westbrook, and the Cheverus Catholic High School.

Most importantly, the Stroudwater Food Pantry exists today because it is a ministry of Stroudwater Christian Church; it is run by a corps of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, and by the people who donate food and donate money to buy food.  The success of this ministry during the past three years is due to you, the people who have supported the Stroudwater Food Pantry, and the fight to reduce hunger in Maine.   Thank you, and God Bless you all !!   —  Doug

Each family received a bag full of non-perishable groceries and a case of breakfast cereal.

A special thank you to the Washington County Missions Team that helped load, transport, and unload 2 tons of food at the Princeton Elementary School! And – thank you to the Missions volunteers that distributed groceries and cereal, along with the clothes, shoes, and books distributed at the school as well! Thank you all!
